The Philippine Stratigraphic Guide is a product of the work of the Committee on Stratigraphic Nomenclature which was formed in 1997 under the auspices of the Geological Society of the Philippines. The Committee is composed of geologists from government agencies, the academe and the private sector involved in stratigraphic work. The chapter on Biostratigraphy was prepared by the Paleontological Society of the Philippines, of which some of the Committee members are officers and members. After several working meetings, the Committee was able to finalize the Guide in its present form. This was presented during the Geological Convention (GEOCON 2000) held on December 6-8, 2000 at the Manila Galleria Suites and subsequently published in the January-June 2001 issue of the Journal of the Geological Society of the Philippines (Vol. 56, p. 1-30).

This issue of the Journal has been well-received and is presently out of print. In response to requests of practitioners, faculty and students for copies of the Guide, the Geological Society of the Philippines has seen it fit to publish it as a separate pamphlet. However, considering that a new Geologic Time Scale was was made public in 2004 during the International Geologic Congress, we are hereby reprinting the Geologic Time Scale 2004 (Gradstein and others, 2004) in lieu of the Geologic Time Scale printed in the Journal. Thus, the present pamphlet is an updated version of the Philippine Stratigraphic Guide as originally published.
