Oceanic crust is a type of the Earth's crust which measures to 5-9 km, the average thickness. It is the part of Earth's lithosphere that surfaces in the ocean basins. Its much more uniform in composition and apart from a thin covering of sediment, consisting largely of the rock basalt , possibly underlain by the rock gabbro. Its composed of the most common elements such as silicon and aluminum with more magnesium than continental crust.
