A geologist's hammer (or rock pick) is a hammer-shaped tool with a chisel attached on half of the head and is used for geological purposes in the field. It is used to obtain fresh mineral samples from the inside of some rocks. They are also used for the purpose of obtaining fossils from the inside of rocks with potential to carry said fossil. This tool is suitable to use for all rock types, although field geologists more often then not prefer to use heavier tools for igneous and metamorphic rock.
