Bixbyite is a manganese iron oxide mineral. The iron to manganese ratio is variable, mostly containing almost no iron. Bixbyite is a metallic dark black, and is often sought after by rock collecters for it's typically appearing isometric crystals often forming, various cubes, octagons and dedecahedrans.
It is commonly associated with beryl, quartz, spessartine, hematite, psuedobrookite, hausmannite, braunite, and topaz in veins and cavities of metamorphic rocks.
Bixbyite was named after the American minerologist, Maynard Bixby. It should not be confused with bixbite, a red form of beryl.
